Two types of psychotherapy (talk therapy) are Couples Therapy and Marriage Counseling. They are often so similar it may be difficult to see the differences.
Couples Therapy can address present day issues but typically focuses on past issues and getting to the root of the problem. Sessions can be held with both partners present or individually. The provider will help the couple uncover negative patterns that may lead to conflict and how to resolve them.
Marriage Counseling tends to focus on present day issues and may even be sought out by a couple prior to marriage. The provider can help the couple develop communication and conflict resolutions skills that may have an impact on the success of the marriage.
